Hello-
I noticed a lot of unidentified processes on my system and after
failing every trick that i could think of, resorted to a complete
re-install of OS (Win 2000), during the install process when prompted I
chose "Format Partition", the OS got installed and with that "fresh"
system I went online, the next thing I knew all of my friendly spywares
and /or viruses were there.
My question is how is it possible after a low level format??? What am I
missing? is it possible for a virus to lodge itself in some place on
the Hard Drive (boot sector?) in such a way that even formatting with
not hurt it?
My hard drive is 40 G, but when Win 2000's setup was formatting, it
talked about 37 G as the partition space available, this makes me
question (Guys ignore me if this is the stupidest thing you have heard
in a long time) if the Win 2000 install CD is really formatting my
whole drive or there is some little (a couple of GB) left out of the
formatting process for the viruses to relax???
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thx.

The infestation time on unprotected systems is now regularily
less than 2 minutes. By the time you've finished just listing
the updates you need in Windows Update, you've probably been "owned"
unless you have an external firewall. Don't go online until *after*
you have installed all the security patches and service packs that you
want.

The time between putting a system with holes on the net and it being
infected is measured in minutes these days. The viruses probably reinfected
your system.

"Windows XP: Surviving the First Day
SANS Institute Internet Storm Center
Since its release, a number of severe security vulnerabilities have
been discovered in Windows XP. These vulnerabilities are used by
worms and viruses, making it impossible to connect an unsecured,
unpatched system to the Internet for any amount of time without
risking exposure and infection. Users of new computers are faced
with the dilemma of being infected by these worms before being able
to download the necessary patches.
This guide will show how to install Windows XP securely, without
being infected by these worms during the patching process..."
