If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
I'm trying to put together a group of tools to protect myself while
travelling and using Public Internet Cafes. Past experience has shown that
many are unmanaged and loaded down with who knows what kind of stuff that
could easily compromise a user typing in his/her credit card number to book
a hotel room. Any way to run stuff from a CD to make sure everything is
clean, or at least make sure that if anything nasty is going on, the user
would be alerted?
I'm particularly concerned about a keystroke logger someone may have
surreptitiously installed.
Any suggestions. ...besides..don't use Internet Cafes?
Another approach I thought might work sometimes might be a bootable Linux
CD..but not all the computers you might find out there allow you to boot
from a CD..

There will always be the possibility of an keylogger that is not
detectable with any tools you would be able to carry with you.
There are keyloggers which attach to the inside of keyboards and store
all the keypresses, and then either periodically or on demand report
the information in an RF burst. To detect such a thing, you would have
to disassemble the keyboard (and know what every chip *should* be in it
and have ways to test that they really are what they claim they are);
that or you would have to monitor the internet cafe for a couple of
weeks/months with a broad-spectrum RF analyzer looking for unexplained
RF... that just happens to be detectable in the direction you are
monitoring from.
If you want to be safe, use only wireless cafes, use only equipment
you have provided, and use a secure encryption to a proxy server.
And hope that no-one has installed a camera that monitors finger
movement or a microphone connected to a circuit that does keypress
analysis based upon the difference in sounds that the various keys
make. Don't forget your tin-foil and your tempest shielding at
home, and use the anti-monitoring fonts designed to foil analysis
of the digital noise out of LCD monitors...
