I have been told by an ex-partner that I had my computer monitored by
her using a 'BOT' program or something? I have broadband with Norton
Firewall and antivirus software and she told me that from her remote
location (her home) she has and did monitor everything I did, from
emails to web use etc, and that it was via a type of program called a
BOT or similar. Apparently it can send information to a printer or a
fax machine?
I have little idea about this sort of thing. Is it possible and if so
how do I detect it and remove it from my PC, or stop it?
Also, does anyone know if there is illegal mobile phone tracking
software that will track a phone without the knowledge of the phone
owner? I think she may have done that too, maybe still does.. (bunny
boiler!!) ANY and all information, only if you genuinely know rather
than are being paranoid, would be appreciated :-)

If you really suspect that your computer is compromised, the only
clear/clean method to remove any doubt is to format the drive and
reinstall the operating system from scratch.

If you want to see if there is spyware on your computer you can run
several of the Spyware detection tools available for free on the Net:

AdAware SE from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

You also need to have kept your Antivirus program updated and remove any
"Exceptions" that the person may have created.

The only way to ensure your computer is clean is to have it
wiped/formatted and reinstall the operating system and applications and
make sure that you don't use the same user names and passwords. Always
use a PASSWORD and change it once a month.

Some phones have GPS locators built into them and some Cell providers
allow you to track where the phone is on a map. There is also the cell
phone bill - if it can be reached online they can see every in/out call
you've made. If you're really worried, call your Phone provider and tell
them about it and ask them to secure your phone/records.

It is possible. No "Personal Firewall" is secure against tunneling
information outside. A POC you'll find here:

http://www.dingens.org/breakout.c

Why you can't just "remove" it, if your computer is compromized, you'll
find here:

There are legal methods for the TelCos and the state to do this. Any
telephony provider knows, where the users are anytime.

Yes, everybody else could buy a IMSI-Catcher and try this at home also.
But only with phones, which are nearby.

Yours,
VB.

Since you appear to be in Leicester UK, you might want to take legal
advice. IANAL, but would have thought that the Computer Misuse Act
1990 <http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1990/Ukpga_19900018_en_1.htm>
could be relevant. Asking in uk.legal.moderated may be an idea.

If you don't want to consider any legal avenues, reformat your PC and
reinstall from scratch, or find a (reputable) computer shop to do
this for you. You could probably get them to take a copy of your
hard disk beforehand (for evidence), but I have no idea how much
they might charge for such a service.

Besides the excellent advice you received from others there are
specific webforums (I don't know any in Usenet, sorry) you can post a
"Hijack This" log. With that in hand they will have a good indication
of what's in your machine and can give specific advice on how to clean
it..

This link has some good structured information for newbies on common
and effective tools for removing malware.

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/You_Must_Read_This_Before_Posting_A_Hijackthis_Log-t2852.html

With luck, you should be clean by the end of step 3.
