If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
I'm running WinXPSP2.
I recently updated my security and now I keep getting
a message saying that my computer is trying to contact
192.168.1.255.137
I keep telling it to block the message and to remember
the answer, but it keeps recurring.

Does anybody know what this is or if not, where to find an
answer.

IP Address locator and the ARIN whois database are not very
informative.

I have done complete system scans and the report says that
my system is clean.

I guess you mean 192.168.1.255:137. And the 137 obviously is not meant as an
IP protocol number, but a TCP or UDP port.

What exactly is "it"?

Sure they aren't. How could they? They're not supposed to hold any
information why "it" (whatever you mean) keeps telling you about a local
broadcast of NetBIOS messages despite you having turned it off.

And this changes exactly what about "it" telling you wrong stuff?

Especially since all that ARIN knows is that this IP range is reserved
for private use in LANs...

If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
these are NetBIOS requests, netbios is very old and has been replaced
by dns and therefore can be disabled.

In order to disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP you should right-click on My
Network Places and select Properties. Then right-click on the Local
Area Connection icon, and select Properties. scroll down and click on
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Properties. Now click Advanced, and
select the WINS tab. There you can disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

The only time that netbIOS needs to be left enabled is when there are
computers on your network running older microsoft operating systems
(anything before 2000, eg win 98, 95)
