That's what I did with my dsl. I don't like it connected all the time.
Supposedly my modem is a combo modem / router. I use Zone Alarm Pro
and have no troubles.

I even turned 'workstation' off in Services. - WinXP Home

Not actually. I just know how to recognize malicious software, being
malicious either by intend or my total incompetence. And I'm not afraid to
tell this honestly to others.
