If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
You could probably run an Email server for a small (say <50 users), with a
low end Pentium workstation.
The problem is disk space for all your users attachments.
The other challenge is integrating this on your Firewall and with your ISPs
network (some block outbound SMTP).
Don't forget Antivirus on each PC and the mail server.

It's been around for 14 years or more.
