What have you been using? And how well has that been working? There is
something to be said for continuing with a familiar program that works well
and that you understand.
If you haven't been using antivirus protection and if you are connected to
the internet, your system is very likely already infected. That may
complicate installing an antivirus program.
Try this site for information on malware and the programs that combat it

Though you should NOT run more than one antivirus program at a time, you
SHOULD use anti-spyware, anti-trojan, and anti-adware protection.
The free version of Grisoft AVG antivirus protection has a good reputation,
and is available for personal use at
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1 .
SpyBot Search&Destroy has a good reputation, and is free for personal use at
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html .
AdAware by LavaSoft has a good reputatioin and is available free for
personal use at
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ .
At a minimum, you should immediately try to download, install, update
definitions, and use the three programs listed above. If your use is non
organizational, you can't do better than SpyBot Search&Destroy and AdAware
by LavaSoft. The free version of AVG is less flexible than the full
version, but offers protection that is as good as any.
There are at least six well respected publishers of antivirus software; any
of their antivirus software offers equivalent protections. The situation
with protections against other forms of malware (spyware, trojans,
adware...) is less clear.
Until you are ready to make a final decision, you should immediately
implement
Grisoft AVG (free version)
SpyBot Search&Destroy (free)
AdAware by LavaSoft (free version).
If you can't download, install, update, and run these programs, you are
already infected, and should post the symptoms here.
