Using hotel computer? Martin Oakes 01-15-2006

I am going to be traveling outside the USA. The hotels should have
internet access on their own computers. I should be able to access my
ISP web site and log in to get mail. I may just send Email to one friend
and let him forward to others. What should I do to remove my tracks from a
strange computer, that is, my Email address, my password and friends Email
address?

Anything else to be concerned about?

I may try uploading pics from my digital camera and save to a CD which I
will be carrying. I suppose I can just delete those and empty the recycle
bin. There won't be anything too personal so I don't care if someone
recovered those.

Absolutely nothing you can do is guaranteed if they control the hardware.
In principle, they can record everything you see and do - if they are
motivated to do so (although they may not be).

The best plan is to bring your own computer (laptop) and *all* your network
traffic should be encrypted. Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway) the
laptop should be solidly protected with firewalls, etc. In fact I
recommend 100% HD OTFE encryption (which will also protect you of your
laptop is stolen).

However, if you're still determined to use others' computers, I recommend
as a minimum that you boot up a complete OS (Knoppix or Puppy or BartPE,
say) from CDROM or USB. It won't protect you against the determined but it
will do in ordinary circumstances.

Regards,

Good luck! If they have the machine loosely configured, you can clear
out stored passwords, URL history, etc. But if they have a loosely
configured machine, who knows what the prior guest could've installed
on the machine in the way of keyloggers. In the general case, you
should have 0 privacy expectations on that computer.

There's little not to be concerned about.

If I couldn't bring my own laptop to use, I'd:

o Change relevant passwords pre-trip to web based email.
o Use https:// web mail while on the trip. Dunno how much
it'll help, but at least eliminates network based
sniffing of stuff you care about.
o Carry a USB memory key on which I have my own copy of portable
Firefox (web browser that'd run from the usb memory key with
all settings contained in files rather than registry settings).
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/browsers/portable_firefox
Use that firefox for all internet activity, which should leave
nothing behind in the way of files and settings. Caveat: if
hotel computers are configured to lock out access to USB mass
storage devices, you may not get to use it.
o Upon return, change passwords to all accessed accounts

That should pound the risk down to something managable. I wouldn't
be checking bank balances while abroad for certain.

Have a good trip!

Best Regards,

Do you happen to own an ipod? There is a low cost USB memory reader
available for the ipod that can inhale your photos onto the ipod's
hard drive, eliminating the need to do that. No computer required.

Just another option...

You can't. At least not with any guarantees. They'll have your user name,
password, address book, anything they want. And there's nothing you can do
about it except pray they don't want it in the first place. It's their
hardware, if they do want it it's theirs. Period.

A better solution would be to use your own machine. It's pretty rare to be
on a trip to any major metropolitan area or even medium sized town these
days without being able to find a WiFi hot spot or two. Legal ones even. ;)

Use your own hardware and make sure everything is encrypted. That means
HTTPS connections to your web mail at the very least, and something like
Tor or an SSH tunnel for a bit more security. In fact setting up an SSH
daemon on your "home" machine and using it as a contact point isn't a
bad thing either. Your ISP won't even know you're gone because
everything will look like it's coming from your normal IP address. ;)
