The IT people at my university suggested that I try Avast! Home Edition
for firewall protection on my home PC. Home machine is 98SE and runs
Symantec AV Corp Edition downloaded from univ under their license. I
checked Avast site and they no longer support 98, "because MS is no
longer
supporting it". That seems a little odd, since Symantec is still
providing me with weekly updates for the AV program. Should I look for
a legacy version of Avast? If so, where? And, forgive newbie stupid
question, but if I not hosting a website, browse only "trusted sites",
and don't leave cmptr net-connected when I am not using it, why do I
need a firewall? Are there other recommended software firewalls that
still run on 98? I tried Norton once, and it messed things up so much
that it took me a long time to unscramble and get everything working
again.

Thanks in advance for helpful suggestions.
