Hi all
does anybody know of a stand-alone, self-contained, bootable antivirus
kit for PCs?
Something like a CD-ROM that you can boot from and launch an antivirus
scan on computer that is infected?

Install it on your computer, update it completely (all 4 scanners), then
burn the FOLDER to CD.
Copy it from CD to exactly where it was installed on your computer to the
infected computer, boot the infected computer in safe mode, run all
scanners until the report clean at least twice.
The updates, once downloaded, are in the folder, so you can
update/burn/take with you to clean.
It's safer still if you can avoid running any code from the infected system
at all, and that can be done by working from Bart CDR boot.
But that means having a clean system to build the Bart disk, and more to
the point, a fair bit of effort and technical fiddling.

Hi,
thank you for your answer.
I must say IMHO if these two solutions are the best that is available
then there is some room left for a killer app in the AV arena.
I mean, I cannot believe there is no ready to run, iso imaged boot cd
that you can simply download, burn, boot the pc from and scan the pc.
Something like a Knoppix live CD.
the first solution has the drawback that you need to switch on the
infected PC and run the scan software from the same disk that is
supposedly infected.
the second solution has the drawback that you have to build the live cd,
and that is time consuming, especially if you dont't have much time.
A Knoppix live cd is no time consuming as you just burn it and boot from
it so maybe there's a special Knoppix+Antivirus iso out there?

How can there be when new signatures are generated so often.
You can NOT expect a "self contained" AV product in such a format because while
it sits on
the self, it gets out-of-date.
