If I were to generalize anything about some of the free versions I have
tried,
so far AVG 8 and AVAST is that they are poorly written. They are memory
hogs, slowing my machine down to a crawl. AVG 8 would not uninstall the
conventional way, so I had to strip it out. AVAST is also poorly behaved.
I
tried to register my copy and nothing I put in was accepted. Now I have
been
running the Virus Recovery Database for over 12 hours and it's behaving like
the Eveready Battery going on and on and on. It's a poorly written package
with
no feedback to the user as to it's progress. I think I will remove AVAST
and hope
it can be done painlessly. AVAST did find two Trojan Viruses on my machine
that AVG 7.5 and AVG 8 could not. Right now, without the VRDB running, I
estimated that AVAST was taking up about 35 percent of my CPU availability.
That's way too much. I don't know if there are other free virus protection
programs
that are less invasive. I'm a bit unsure about the requirements for email
protection,
since I think scanning an email at it's entry point may be more effective
than relying
on other programs to catch it. I am running Netscape for email on my Altos
1.3 gig
machine running Windows 2000, and Mozilla on my 2.4 quad machine with
Vista.
The AVG 8 runs better on the Vista system, but I'm wondering how good the
virus
protection is after AVAST caught two Trojans that AVG 8 didn't. I'm
looking for
a free anti-virus program that scans effectively and doesn't bring my
Altos machine
to a crawl.
