Good point.

Hell, legitimate licensees have enough trouble keeping Live Update
working, and recognizing that a given piece of software is activated!
LOL.

Sandy,

Your mother taught you better than that, didn't she? <grin>

If you currently have no AV protection, download one of the free AV
apps, and then investigate your options:

AVG - Grisoft
(http://www.grisoft.com/doc/Programs/lng/us/tpl/tpl01)
Avast! - ALWIL Software
(http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html)
AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
(http://www.free-av.com/)

All of the above AV apps may be upgraded to a
Professional/Full-Featured AV app for a fee.

Some General Anti-Virus info:

In order to switch or even evaluate another AV, you MUST completely
remove NAV. Some info about removing AV apps (particularly NAV):

Before you install ANY AV application, make sure that you acquire all
information/tools/utilities that are necessary for its COMPLETE removal.

Ron :)

Well, it's illegal.
But I wouldn't pay for Norton... I wouldn't use it at all.

It's the same program, how can the performance differ?

I suspect you have the standard Windows problem that the built-
in file indexing is trying to do too much. In older Windows it
was handled by a utility called FastFind that you could switch
off. Dunno what handles it in XP (or 2000, come to that).

Hello sandy_aquarius,

Indexing service turned off?
Should be auto started.
Look at Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services.

Defragment drives?

Defragment Registry?
Tune Up Utilies 2006 has a good registry cleaner and defragmenter.
Also Ace Utilies.

Any luck?

are you the first time posting in newsgroups or posting in this newsgroup?

Please configure your newsclient to right quoting-markers ">> " as usual
in usent - see other normal posting behavior. Your quoting markers are
confusing and make postings especially within longer threads harder to
read. THX in advance for your kind understanding. BTW a wish: try bottom
posting instead of TOFU (test over full quoting). THX.
