I'm currently experimenting with different AV programs to find one
that suits me the best. Besides ecar, I'm looking for other virus
files to use to test the response of the different programs (dangerous
games yes I know; but I'm willing to risk an old pc box). Any
suggested links?

Sure: www.av-comparatives.org

Click on the Comparatives link for results of tests that used hundreds
of thousands of samples.

Thanks for the link, but sorry, you're way off. As stated earlier I'm
looking for actual virus files themselves in order to do some real
world testing right here at home.

His answer was correct.
Request for virus samples are unacceptable in an anti virus news group.
Please don't do it again.

You mentioned the EICAR file. Use it. (you called it "ecar")

FYI it is not an un-common practice to use real-world virus samples in
a controlled test on a single pc or network. I'm sure other readers on
alt.comp.anti-virus (and possibly some of the other group moderators
other than yourself) can attest to that.

>Please don't do it again.

As moderator of at.comp.anti-virus I am aware that it is your duty to
responsibly mandate what belongs and what doesn't belong in this
usenet group and I apologize if I upset you in anyway. Before you
impose a ban on me let me reassure you I felt my question was a fair
one.
