The AVG Free anti-virus program shown:
Virus found SpySheriff C:\Windows\secure32.html
What to do to get rid of the virus?
Is it dengerous? What can it do in the system?
Operating System: Windows98SE.

Spy Sheriff is a nasty one. It downloads other spyware, hijacks web pages,
and is very difficult to get rid of. My father had an infection, and I had
to rely on some top notch help over at CastleCops. I couldn't track down
that tutorial, but the following one is very similar. It is time consuming
process, but the only alternative is to wipe the drive and start with a
clean install. Good luck:

It is NOT a virus. It is non-viral malware.
Two part reply..
Perform Part 1 then perform Part 2.
If the first two parts don't work, perform the alternate section.
It is suggested that you execute each tool in Normal Mode then in Safe Mode.
If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to JRE/JSE
Version 5.0. There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being
exploited.
This is most likely why you got infected with malware.
Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of Sun
Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed and Sun Java JRE/JSE Version 5.0
Update 7
be installed ASAP.
Simple check, look under...
C:\Program Files\Java
The only folder under that folder should be the latest version...
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_07

displayed in your browser (Opera, FireFox or Internet Explorer). However, if
you are using
WinXP, Win2K or Win2003 your system will be left in a state where you will have
to manually
shutdown/reboot the PC. On Win9x/ME platforms the report will not be shown in
your bowser
but your PC will automatically be shutdown. It is suggested that you move the
report out of
c:\mcafee before performing another scan.
It would be best to scan in both Safe Mode and in Normal Mode and save a copy of
the HTML
report for each session.

First of all I'll be able to try anything tomorrow morning as the earliest.
The infected computer is not mine.
Do I have to download the McAfee anti-virus software to be able to use
the method you've suggested ?
As I said the infected computer uses the Windows98SE.
At the moment I'm working on my computer with WinXP Pro.
After reading your e-mail I checked this computer and in the folder
C:\Program Files\Java\ I have folder: j2re1.4.2_06.
Is it dangerous and should I update it to Version 5?
(by the way - what means the "Update 7" in your mail?)
If so, where to download it from?
Before I got your e-mail I had got a suggestion from the
pl.comp.os.ms-windows.win9x usersgroup.
The advice said that I should:
1. remove the infected file C:\Windows\secure32.html in the Safe Mode.
2. use the Ad-aware se 1.06
3. use the Spybot Search&Destroy
What do you think about it? The author of the suggestion said that
his method was effective.

No. The utility will auto-download the needed McAfee files for you.

This wasn't "mail". You are confusing a News Group post with email.
You are using Sun Java v4.2 Update 6 which is a vulnerable version. Go to
Control
panel --> "add/remove programs" and remove it then install the latest Sun Java
which is
JRE/JSE Version 5.0 Update 7.

I think the information is insufficient. The utilities I posted about are more
more
comprehensive for this malware family.
