If this is true, why do supposedly unbiased third parties (ex.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2008_02.php ) rate
Avira and other free products as more effective than paid versions of
NOD32, Sophos and others? Furthermore, if paid versions from any one
vendor are more effective than free versions from the same vendor, why
don't these same sites make this information known?

Perhaps because you haven't bothered to actually look? You're
conveniently referring to a comparison between Antivir's PE Premium and
other products such as NOD32 and Sophos, while ignoring the differences
between the Premium version and free Personal version:

http://www.free-Av.com/en/download/1/download_avira_antivir_personal__fre
e_antivirus.html

Note how according to Avira's own web site, the free Avira Personal
version does NOT include:

1) Protection against spyware
2) Special protection against email viruses (POP 3 and SMTP)
3) Protection against annoying adware

-----------------------------------------

Or if you don't want to talk about Avira, how about AVG?

http://www.grisoft.com/ww.upgrade-free

Note how the free version does NOT include:

1) Anti-Rootkit - Protection against hidden threats that deliver malicious
content
2) Safe Downloads - Screens your downloads for malicious content
3) Safe Surf - Real-time protection from poisoned web pages
4) Safe Instant Messaging - Protects your ICQ and MSN communication

Think the lack of any of these might make a difference to the comparative
you referenced that was testing the PAID version of AVG?

-------------------------------------------

I know... I know... pesky facts are a pain to have to deal with. For
instance, if you don't want to talk about Avira's free vertsion or AVG's
free version, then how about Avast? I suggest looking at:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-compare-home-professional.html

Note how the FREE version does NOT include the "Script Blocker" in it's
resident protection? I wonder how that would affect the stats you were
referencing in your post?

If you have a comparative that actually compares apples to apples (the
free versions of Avira, AVG, Avast to the others), I'd be interested in
seeing it.

In order to educate the uneducated, the poster to whom I replied
might've said something like

(Typically, paid versions have more functionality than paid versions)
or
(Site comparisons of multiple a-v products often don't include
differences in functionality)

instead of just saying that "Unless it is a promotion with
> so many buying nags to make you angry, it is a second
> class to the paid version, that is a guarantee. "

because the uneducated don't realize what a blanket statement that is
nor does it give a clue what a potential user/buyer should look for.

Yes, actually I have bothered to look and yes, I am still learning.

Sounds like someone in question may be working for a particular
Antivirus vendor? The free ones also offer paid versions,I am using Avast
professional and it does everything I want it to do.I don't like
internet security suites.Stand alones are better in my opinion. It varies
on the individual and circumstances and the delicacy and secrecy of the
files one has on his or her pc.I have learned alot from people like
Art,David Lipman and others in the groups. And guess what?I am still
learning.Thank God..Another great question of the ages is this.Who in
the heck do we vote for in November?lol.. What choice do we have?Sad
huh..Sincerely RH710

A good rule of thumb for Usenet is to never listen to anyone who tries to
post anonymously. If someone is afraid to stand behind their words, their
words aren't worth diddly.
