Is a software firewall such as Zone Alarm essential for added
protection if I am already using the XP firewall, AVG antivirus (free)
and have a wired router (D-link-524)? Will it offer me any additional
protection? If so, is there a better free firewall than Zone alarm?

Thanks.

The XP firewall and the router block incoming only, doesn't tell you anything
about what might be trying to call home. Disable the XP firewall before
installing ZA.

Communication: The art of moving an idea from one mind to another, hopefully
without distortion.

As mentioned the Windows XP firewall blocks "inbound" threats, however if
something gets through and then connects "outbound" you wouldn't see the
activity. A software firewall like ZoneAlarm (there's a freeware version),
or Comodo Firewall Pro (freeware) will show you all the outbound traffic in
detail. In addition to having a lot more control you will learn a lot about
how your software is working, and develop a better understanding of system
security IMHO. I use Comodo Firewall Pro as it has roughly the same
features as ZoneAlarm Pro. The free version of ZoneAlarm doesn't give you
the same level of monitoring and control that the Pro version offers.

I'm looking at ZA and Comodo - what made you choose Comodo
over ZA (pro versions)?

TIA

You have to pay for ZoneAlarm Pro, and after the initial cost there is a
yearly renewal fee to stay eligible for updates. Comodo Firewall Pro is
comparable to ZA Pro (I used ZAPro for years and then switched to CFP) and
is completely free for personal use.
