Providing virus samples carelessly would be attaching viral files to a
usenet post in these NG's. Zipped and PW-protected if necessary (with
PW in plain view).

Why are you so hung up about this?

no, that's just *another* way of providing them carelessly... there's a
broad range of carelessness and both your actions and this fall into
that category...

because the virus problem is as much a social problem as it is a
technological problem... and i always get hung up on people being part
of the problem...

that may be your intention, but as they say the road to hell is paved
with good intentions...

since you've been around for a while i guess you've probably already
read this
http://anti-virus-rants.blogspot.com/2004/12/viruses-and-disclosure.html

basically don't give samples to people unless you know them well enough
to be sure you can trust them and don't ask for samples from people
unless they know you well enough that you can expect to be trusted...

further, consider that outsiders have no way of knowing what kind of
relationship you have with the people you request samples from, that
they don't need to know that you're exchanging samples with someone, and
that if you really do have a good trusting relationship with the person
it should be trivial to do your exchange in private rather than in public...

| counts...
