I ran the free NOD32 online scanner (www.eset.com/onlinescan/) on a machine
and afterwards the "My Web Search" toolbar appeared on both IE and FireFox.

I really really hope I am wrong about this but is it possible that the free
NOD32 online scanner installs spyware on a machine?

from your description it is at best a possibly unwanted program (aka
greyware)...

why does everything get called spyware these days?

I use Nod32 and frequently visit their site and participate in their forum.
I have never seen anything on their site or in the forum to indicate that
the Mywebsearch toolbar is installed by them.

Most likely a coincidence, would be my guess.

The following list of products are know to install MyWebSearch;
a.. SmileyCentral
b.. PopSwatter
c.. HistorySwatter
d.. Incredimail free version
e.. Popular Screen Savers
f.. Cursor Mania
g.. FunBuddyIcons
a.. MyFunCards
b.. MyMailStationary
c.. MyMailSignature
d.. MyMailStamps
e.. MySpeedBar
f.. MyWay Search Assistant
g.. FunWebProducts
Any of the above look familiar? ie, were any of them installed on the
system?

Thanks. Actually it was a coworker's computer and she said none of the
software packages you mentioned were there. The NOD32 people said that they
only install their own software and I believe them. You are right, it must
have been a coincidence.
