I bought McAfee anti-virus, version 10.

The only way you can update the virus signatures is to
"Log in" to the Mcafee site, and you have to provide them
with your name and email address. Also when it runs it has
to use an ActiveX component, which always wants to access the
internet, (Even if you are not updating the signatues,
just running a scan.)

I uninstalled it, cleaned out program files and the registry
but there is something still there!
wanting to access the internet, my zonealarm caught it.

It is 200612917256_mcinfo.exe

I have startup cop pro, but it doesn't list this.
I looked in services, but it is not there.

I looked for any exe on my system that has
the mcinfo as a string before the .exe,
but there is nothing.

How did this program start, and where is it and
how to I get rid of it.

Thanks,

Larry

PS. does anyone know if a good antivirus that doesn't phone home?

I recommend the McAfee help forums -

NOD32, Kaspersky.

Note: NOD32 antivirus has a feature which allows suspicious files and
some statistics to be submitted to them (ESET) automatically. This
feature is 'OPT-IN'. In otherwords you need to activate it yourself.
Since you don't like the idea of phoning home... I thought I would
mention this.

Grisoft AVG 7.1 is very good. Avast is good enough for most users. You
may also qualify to use the free editions of these programs. Unlike
most of the other programs the free editions of these 2 programs are
fully functional not crippleware.
