I have a drive on which I store only DOS Wordperfect files and only
access them with that program. However, for various reasons to long
too explain, the file extension is a code for the date and sequence
number, which I guess looks suspicious to AV programs.

It looks like my AV program is scanning them and slowing down access.

Are there any AV programs in which I can turn off an indivdiual drive?

At the moment I am using Avira Antivir and the only option I can find
is to turn on and off all local drives.

Kaspersky AV and Symantec AV CE give you individual drive options. I believe
NOD32 does, too.

Most AV programs will allow you to scan selected areas of the computer,
what program are you using?

In Avira, go Extras| Configuration
Then, make sure you're in "Expert" mode, and go
Scan | Exception and Guard | Exception
and put in whatever you want to exclude.
