Hi;

On my computer at work, we have McAffee Virusscan enterprise 8.0
installed. It has Patch 13 Installed with Scan Engine 5100. The
computer searches every file on the harddrive and on the network and it
grinds to a halt. It is impossible to get anything done because it is
so slugish. This happens everytime you start the computer.

I want to adjust the settings, but I cant figureout how. The program is
started up in the task manager. If I right click on the shield icon,
all I can see is "On Access Scan Statistics" and "About". If I double
click the shield icon, the "On Access Scan Statistics" screen pops up.
There are no icons in the Program Files directory. If I go to the
mcaffee folder, there is only one app with an icon...That is the
UpdaterUI. There are a couple other exe files, but if ran they go to a
dos window, run quickly and close the dos window.

How can I adjust the settings on this? If I cant adjust the settings,
What tsr files should I close from my Windows Task Manager Window?

Any advise is appreciated
Pat

If it is setup correctly, you can't. The Admnistrator can.

However, it can be disabled by stopping the "mcshield" service.

What you you mean by "...searches every file on the harddrive and on the
network..." ?
You need to be specific.

Settings are done in the VirusScan Console.

Is it performing a "On Demand" scan ?
Is it examining all file types while scanning in "On Access" mode ?
Is "scan files on Network Drives" enabled ?

Hi Dave;

I am an administrator for the section and I have all of the
Administrator passwords. I do not see a VirusScan Console on the
system. I am thinking about uninstalling the application on 15
computers, and then reinstalling it. I do not have the app on CD, I
have to download it from the corporate server. That will be a pain, but
I might have to do it.

This may work....just hitting alt+cntrl+delete and ending the process.

It scans every file on the hard drive and on mapped network drives. We
log on and off with a Common Access Card and everytime that is done, it
starts the scan.

Yes...It is examining all files when the computer is started up or
logged on.

The default install includes a boot-time full scan. I didn't
think it defaulted to scannning network drives as well as local
disks, though - that's an option I'd avoid.
The default install gives access to the VirusScan Console via a
rightclick on the VShield icon in the system tray or an entry
in the Start-Programs-NetworkAssociates menu.
We do see some machines running slow here while the boot-time
scan is running. Killing the scan32 process sorts that out, and
if you have admin rights you can tell it not to run, or to run
at a different time, in the Console - if the mcshield process
is killing your machines, you might want to look for another
product, or at least take a very close look at what options are
set up for the On Access scanner.
