Norton Anti-virus may not be the best you can get. There are other
standalone packages with better performance. I do use Symantec
Antivirus 10 because it is provided by my employer for our home
machines and has nowhere the effect on system resources that NAV does.
On the 30+ machines that we have it installed at work it has only
caused problems on one machine. A simple uninstall and reinstall
corrected that problem.

Mike,
You are certainly welcome. For your anti-spyware arsenal, check out these:
Spyware Blaster - site blocking
(http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
Spybot S&D - on demand scanning, frequent updates
(http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/)
a2 (a-squared free) - on demand scanning, frequent updates
(http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/)
Ewido Security Suite - on demand scanning, frequent updates
(http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Almost everyone around here uses Spyware Blaster and Spybot S&D. A2
and Ewido specialize in fighting Trojans. With anti-spyware apps, the
more the merrier, unlike your AV app and PFW ... one of each will do
just fine.
The info I gave you WRT AV apps was based on a year of research. If
your AV app fits your needs, go for it. It's an AV app, not a
religion. PFWs are a different story, definitely a religion. <g>
Stealth or not, Outbound or not. The Stealth and Outbound side says
that the PFW matters. Here is the other side:

Suffice it to say, that if you have a broadband connection, at the
very least a cheap NAT router is a must.
FWIW, I am a KAV fan, but my daughter gets her McAfee AV with her
Comcast subscription. She wanted to know if she should switch. I told
her "Hell No!, save your money for your parents' old age. And stay
away from the porno sites." <g>

Opinion only but I like Avast better. I especially like the frequent,
small to download updates.

My two cents:
Long ago, I tried AVG and then Avast. Both seemed to work fine, but the
AVG freeware license only allowed it to be used on one computer in each
home. For whatever reason, I liked the Avast GUI better, so just went with
using Avast on my home computers.
I later had a problem that I thought might be related to my EZ Armor
software (which I was then using because it is free for RoadRunner users),
so wound up uninstalling EZ Armor, and using Avast and Sygate PF on my
wife's machine, and all has gone well, and this continues to be the
combination used there. BTW, it turned out that the problem was due to an
MS critical update instead of EZ Armor.
More recently, on this machine, there was an EZ Armor problem, so I tried
Avast on this machine. However, the virus definitions updates were not
working, so I switched to AVG freeware, and all is fine with it.
