Hi !
I'm using Avast Home 4.7 - XP-Pro sp2
I received a .zip file containing an executable file. If I unzip and
execute the file, Avast reports that the file
"C:\Windows\System32\directx.exe" (which is not the name of the file in
the archive but seems installed by that file) contains the
Win32:Bropia-AQ worm. I selected to "quarantine" that file - so far so
good.
What worries me is that if I perform the same operation again (unzip
and execute), I no longer get any virus message. This happens either
immediately or after a reboot.
I verified in the administration tools that all four Avast services
were still running and set to automatic. Same thing in the processes
list in task manager.
I also performed a McAfee online scan, but nothing was found.
I copied the .zip file to another test machine, and the same thing
happens.
How can this be explained ?
Any suggestions ?
Thanks

The real question is what are you doing executing malware that was sent to you
in a ZIP file
?
The other question is why doesn't Avast catch this when the file is extracted
from the ZIP
file or from within the ZIP file ?
You idicate that AFTER you execute the attachment, Avast alets on
"C:\Windows\System32\directx.exe". Sounds like it already infected the PC !
Please submit a sample to "directx.exe" Virus Total --
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
The submission will then be tested against many different AV vendor's scanners.
That will give you an idea what it is and who recognizes it. In addition,
unless told
otherwise, Virus Total will provide the sample to all participating vendors.
You can also submit a suspect, one at a time, via the following email URL...
mailto:scan@virustotal.com?subject=SCAN
When you get the report, please post back the exact results.
I suggest you use ANOTHER AV scanner to disinfect the PCs you most likely
infected.
Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe
To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go
through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.
C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal
Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the
PC.
You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you
can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded
the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode
[F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run
in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.
When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive
PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Thanks for your reply. I'll perform the suggested tests on an image
containing the zipped file as well as with the extrated (but
unexecuted) .exe file.
So far, I can tell you that Trend Micro found nothing.

Testing if it was safe or not.
When in doubt, I always do this kind of operation on a "test" machine
with a fresh ghosted (clean) image.

As I said in my OP, I did that with McAfee online scanner - which found
nothing.

I copied the zip file to another machine running NAV 2004, and it did
the same (ie: found nothing). Since it is a production machine, I did
not execute the file.
Thanks again,
