All of them? Do a full scan. Right-click on the systray "a" icon,
choose "Start avast! Antivirus". Right-click on window, choose "Start
Scan -> Select Scan Area ->" and pick what you want to do, close dialog,
click Start button on main window.

A particular one? Highlight the file in Windows Explorer, right-click
and choose "Scan <filename>".

I did that and it still will not scan exe or bmp files so how do I
change the settings so it will scan all files? I am curious as to why
it doesn't seem to want to scan exe or bmp files. Could someone tell
me why?

Left-click on the systray "a" icon.
Select the "Standard Shield".
Click the Customize button.
On the Basic tab, everything should be checked.
Go to the Advanced tab.
Look through the list in the scrolling box, to see if .exe and .bmp are
listed there as 'not to be scanned.'

If this doesn't help, I have no other ideas.
