I figured this report was some kind of backhanded way of gaining
advertising, etc.

Nope. Research shows that they were indeed hacked via a SQL Injection or PHP
vulnerability.
Visitors can get infected with a Virut virus through an IFrame exploit.

It seems the exploitations used in the malicious web site referenced in the
IFrame are all
well known.
