It was suggested I give AntiVir a try which I have done.
Installation went fine.
I tried to update by clicking on "Start Internet Update" while on line.
I received no assurance that an update had taken place or was completed.
I went to their forum to post this question I am asking here only to find
that I could not post a question because I do not read or understand German.
How do you know if you have successfully updated the antivirus protection?

When you clicked the update-didn't a dialog box come up showing the
progress? After it is finished,it just closes. If you open the main
program and click on report/display-the vdf date and number is shown.

Yes, when I clicked the update a dialog box came up, but it did not indicate
any progress whatsoever.
I checked report/display. I read the reoprt twice. There was only one
reference to vdf as follows:
VDF file 6.32.15.17 (0) of 11.11.2005
11.11.2005 is the date I downloaded AntiVir, not the date I attempted the
update.

If you right-click on the tray icon and select about, it will tell you
the vdf which says 6.32.15.16 11/11/2005 on mine. I just installed
AntiVir today, wonder why my vdf has a different number?
There is a English section in the forums. I think I will post there and
find out.

I went to my copy of Anti-Vir and performed an update.

- when I right-clicked, a pop-up came up showing me the scan-engine and
VDF versions on my compute and "unknown" under the the versions on the
Internet. It included a progress bar, flash-light, and the copies of a
phone line connecting two modems together.

- when I clicked the "start" button, it showed that it was surfing the
net the "flash-light" at the top of the screen started swaying back and
forth like as MS does when it's searching for resources.

- after it got the version numbers it asked me if I wanted to update.
(my notes aren't clear here, so the wording may be vastly different)

- as it downloaded files pages started moving from one side of the
telephone to another. I wish there was someway to stop all these
animations and just stick with a progress bar.

- when it was finished it asked me if I want to install or just to
continue. (I assume the difference is whether a new search engine is
involved or just the VDF.)

So basically, it sounds as if you didn't click the start button. I know
I hesitated when I first used it. But then I got used to the extra click.
