My subscription's nearly up for systemworks 2006. They want Aus$80+ to
renew. LOL!. What's a good alternative for virus checking?

Check out AVG Free v7.5 and Avast. Both free for personal use and both
competent, IME.
(There are others, as well)
For malware/spyware, you have a plethora of choices, again free for personal
use:

Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware
SuperAntiSpyware

are my favorites.

Google 'em up and stop paying protection!

What's a good alternative to NAV/NSW 2006?

How about NAV/NSW 2002 !

Yes. If you can get your hands on NAV 2002 (which is part of NSW
2002) then you can perpetually re-install it once a year to renew it's
license or auto-update capability.

The NAV 2002 scan engine is updated with each virus definition file
and gives you the same coverage or detection capability as any newer
version of NAV.
