If you were  Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
Thanks again to everyone. I now have Revo Uninstaller installed (like the
feel of it) BUT it did not find AVG installed so, as suggested, I just
downloaded it again and installed it - and it installed completely, no
problems.

I think something must have gone wrong at a very late stage of the
original installation (the latest installation dialogue seemed just a bit
more elaborate than in the original installation - but the installation
wizard in the original case did seem to have set most things up -
including the icons in the All programs menu).

Anyway, as so often in the world of windows - the problem seems to have
been cured without having ever been diagnosed.
