AVG not updating. Bill Jillians 08-09-2005

Everytime I log on my AVG faithfully updates its virus definitions and I
stay up to date with virus that have been identified.

Until two weeks ago that is. My AVG hasn't updated since July 23rd. The
downloader starts every time I log on to the Internet, it just doesn't
download anything. I have had AVG for about 6 months now. Is there a
cut off after which you have to pay or is AVG not releasing updates at
the moment. I suppose a third possibility is that my software has
stopped functioning properly and I might need to uninstall and
reinstall.

Does anyone have any experience of this problem?

Thanks
Bill

I've been running AVG Free for over a year set up to automatically check for
updates each morning. I show Program Version 7.0.338 , Virus Base
267.10.3/66 Release Date 8/8/2005 8:20:00 PM. No problem here.

I've not personally had that problem. Try looking through Grisoft's
forums: http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/. Or just try an uninstall
and reinstall.

Or the problem may be, as others have reported, that the default
Grisoft server is busy. A workaround is to redirect AVG to another
server by adding this line at the end of your Hosts file:

193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com

Add it below the line "127.0.0.1 localhost" which should already be
there.

The Hosts file is in your C:\Windows folder. If you don't already have
one, you should see a file named "Hosts.sam". ("Sam" for "sample".)
Shift, right click the file, click "open with", leave UNchecked
"Always use this program to open this file", select Notepad, add the
line at the bottom of the file, click File | Save as, save the file in
the Windows folder as "Hosts", with no quotes and no extension. HTH.

Thanks Luke I'll try that out. I read on the Grisoft website that there
was a problem with ZoneAlarm, which I also run, but I've tried disabling
ZA and I still can't get AVG to download updates :(
